Orbit Logic of Greenbelt, Md., has created SpyMeSat, an iOS app that notifies a user when an imaging spacecraft might have them in sight. The app tracks spy satellites and unclassified imaging satellites, and displays a map of orbit tracks, as well as the location of remote sensing satellites with upcoming passes over a user's specified location.
For over a decade, Orbit Logic has developed and deployed advanced space mission planning and scheduling solutions. The technology the company typically sells gives aerospace mission planners, engineers and operators the ability to define and configure systems, constraints and scheduling goals. The 1.99 SpyMeSat app is a deviation from that norm.
Alex Herz, president of Orbit Logic, calls SpyMeSat a product that extends the company's customer base beyond the aerospace, defense and government intelligence communities. "I actually got the idea for the app from talking to friends outside the aerospace industry who were always very interested in space and satellites and imaging from space. This app answers those questions in a fun and interactive way," Herz said.
That information SpyMeSat provides is an amalgam of available public information about commercial and international imaging satellites. SpyMeSat draws data from multiple sources, including orbit data from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The NORAD spacecraft data comes via CelesTrak, a website designed to provide tools that support tracking satellites and understanding orbital mechanics.
SpyMeSat can be organized in several ways, and can define a satellite's trajectory around a user's location, and can show an alert when a camera-equipped or scanning satellite is in range. iPhone users can learn more details about which satellites might be overheard, and specific locations and satellites can be pinpointed.

Boffins in Australia have applied a hundreds-of-years-old astronomical rule to data from the Kepler planet-hunting space telescope. They've come to the conclusion that the average star in our galaxy has not one but "two" Earth-size planets in its "goldilocks" zone where liquid water - and thus, life along Earthly lines - could exist.
"The ingredients for life are plentiful, and we now know that habitable environments are plentiful," says Professor Charley Lineweaver, a down-under astrophysicist.
Lineweaver and PhD student Tim Bovaird worked this out by reviewing the data on exoplanets discovered by the famed Kepler planet-hunter space scope. Kepler naturally tends to find exoplanets which orbit close to their parent suns, as it detects them by the changes in light they make by passing in front of the star. As a result, most Kepler exoplanets are too hot for liquid water to be present on their surfaces, which makes them comparatively boring.
Good planets in the "goldilocks" zone which is neither too hot nor too cold are much harder to detect with Kepler, which is a shame as these are the planets which might be home to alien life - or alternatively, home one day to transplanted Earth life including human colonists, once we've cracked that pesky interstellar travel problem.
However there exists a thing called the Titius-Bode relation - aka Bode's Law - which can be used, once you know where some inner planets are, to predict where ones further out will be found.
Assuming Bode's Law works for other suns as it does here, and inputting the positions of known inner exoplanets found by Kepler, Lineweaver and Bovaird found that on average a star in our galaxy has two planets in its potentially-habitable zone.
That doesn't mean there are habitable or inhabited planets at every star, of course. Even here in our solar system, apparently lifeless (and not very habitable) Mars is in the habitable zone.
Even so, there are an awful lot of planets in the galaxy, so some at least ought to have life on them, and in some cases this life ought to have achieved a detectable civilisation. Prof Lineweaver admits that the total lack of any sign of this is a bit of a puzzler.
"The universe is not teeming with aliens with human-like intelligence that can build radio telescopes and space ships," admits the prof. "Otherwise we would have seen or heard from them.
"It could be that there is some other bottleneck for the emergence of life that we haven't worked out yet. Or intelligent civilisations evolve, but then self-destruct."
Of course, humans - some approximations of which have been around for some hundreds of thousands of years, perhaps - have only had civilisation of any kind in any location for a few thousand of those years. Our civilisation has only risen to levels where it could be detectable across interstellar distances very recently.
There may be many planets out there inhabited by intelligent aliens who either have no civilisation at all, or only primitive civilisation. There may be quite a few who have reached or passed the stage of emitting noticeable amounts of radio or other telltale signs, but those emissions either will not reach us for hundreds of thousands of years - or went past long ago.
It would seem reasonable to suspect that there are multitudes of worlds out there where life exists in plenty but has never become intelligent, as Earth life was for millions of years before early humans began using tools really quite recently.
But the numbers are still such that the apparent absence of star-travelling aliens could make you worry about the viability of technological civilisation if, like Professor Lineweaver, you learn your astrophysics out of textbooks and lectures (and publish your research, as we see here, in hefty boffinry journals like the "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society").
But if movies, speculofictive novels and TV have taught us anything here on the "Reg" alien life desk, it is that in fact the galaxy is swarming with star-travelling aliens (and/or humans taken secretly from planet Earth for mysterious purposes in the past, or perhaps humans from somewhere else etc). The reason we don't know about them is that "they don't want us to".

My very close and very real experience took place in late December of 1978. The location was technically Valdosta, GA, the actual physical site was less than a 1/4 mile from the front gate of Moody Air Force Base.
The object was a dark (black) solid V (chevron shaped) metallic object. The object was solid and had rows of white colored light on each wing. There were no turbine engines or jet engines on the object. The white lights never dimmed or flashed out, but remained lit. The object was almost silent, it was dark, (kind of reflecting the dark night sky and ground) it did make noise but to this day i have no reference to what it sounded like.
The object moved slowly, perhaps at a speed between 10-20 miles per hour and was headed in the direction of Moody Air Force base and the object passed directly over head as i stood in a driveway (was shooting a basketball) when i looked up at the basket i saw the object.
The object traveled above the highway toward F4 fighter aircraft (Moody was a Tactical Air Command base in those days). I could hear the F4 Phantoms very well. The F4 aircraft were making there approach to the landing strip (counted a least 3-4 of them) descending for a landing. The V shaped object passed above the landing F4 aircraft. I don't know where the V shaped came from or who or what commandeered that craft, but if it was an Air Force plane, the pilot would have been busted and rifted to an airman for flying his craft into the path of other US government aircraft, and for endangering US Government property.
I believe the government knows more than it is letting on, perhaps the government is scared, perhaps the government is no longer in control of US air space. It's taken me 31 years to come to this conclusion, that being that our officals (elected and or choosen), are not the most intelligent or talented people, but they are in charge, and this is a mess and if they (government officals) are not in charge of the USA, then who is?

I'm starting to receive more communications from MUFON, so I must really be a member. That's good. Sadly, I did not join in time to attend the Annual MUFON Symposium, held last weekend at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, CA. That's bad, but I am hoping that a full recap of the meeting will be posted on the MUFON website before the end of the year. And next year, without a doubt, I will attend.
Meanwhile, some startling news has come out of the July MUFON newsletter I received the other day -- startling for me, anyway. In a transcript of a panel discussion held at the Ozark UFO Conference in Eureka Springs, Arkansas last April, there is much talk of human-alien hybrids. Now, it should be noted that one of the panelists, Travis Walton, is among the most famous UFO abductees around, so he brings some gravitas to the discussion. Anyway, it seems that with all the women who've been abducted by aliens and probed and examined over the years, there are potentially a great many aliens among us... half-human, half-alien hybrids that are impossibly good-looking and have an almost unearthly fashion sense (I immediately suspected my wife, and I am watching her a little more closely now...).
I decided that, as an aspiring MUFON Field Investigator, I should do some research into this phenomenon. So, just now, I did a google search for "human-alien hybrids," and I really was not prepared for what I found.
