The United States has inaugurated a massive radio telescope in rural West Virginia to listen for signs of extraterrestrial life on 86 Earth-like planets.
US astronomers said on Friday that the colossal dish will gather 24 hours of data on each of the planets, which have been selected from a list of 1,235 planets identified by NASA's Kepler space telescope, AFP reported.
"It's not absolutely certain that all of these stars have habitable planetary systems, but they're very good places to look for ET," said Andrew Siemion, one of the scientists working on the project.
The mission is part of the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project, which was launched in 1984 to search for electromagnetic transmissions from intelligent extraterrestrial creatures.
Siemion said that they are utilizing cutting edge equipment in radio astronomy technology, noting, "Our search employs the largest fully steerable radio telescope on the planet, and the most sensitive radio telescope in the world capable of undertaking a SETI search of this kind."
He stated, "We will be looking at a much wider range of frequencies and signal types than has ever been possible before," adding that the surface of the telescope is 100 by 110 meters and it can record nearly one gigabyte of data per second.
Earlier last month, the SETI institute announced that it had called off a major part of its efforts to discover extra-terrestrial communication due to budget cuts.

MANILA, Philippines-Two successive news items in last week's Philippine Daily Inquirer caught my attention. The first was on May 15 where the Vatican's chief astronomer declared that believing in the existence of extraterrestrial creatures (ET's) is not in conflict with Christianity.
The second was the news item the following day, May 16, saying the British defense department released a formerly classified file showing that aliens from outer space have been visiting the earth for many years now.
In an interview with the Vatican newspaper, Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, a 45-year-old Jesuit priest who heads the Vatican Observatory was quoted as saying, "How can we exclude that life has developed elsewhere... certainly, in a universe this big, you can't exclude this hypothesis. Just as there is a multiplicity of creatures on earth, there can be other beings, even intelligent, created by God."

But Daniken was later criticized by serious scholars for his questionable research, methodology and for his tendency to exaggerate his findings to fit his preconceived theories.
Other authors followed suit and made their own research. One of them was Andrew Thomas who wrote the book "We are Not the First" which showed that some ancient peoples already had invented computers, batteries, electricity and even airplane models.
Alien abduction stories began appearing in the west. They tell of how creatures from outer space abducted them, examined them in their laboratories and then erased their memories of the abduction. Through hypnosis, they remembered everything. One of the most celebrated alien abductions was that of Betty and Barney Hill. Their story is told in a book entitled "Interrupted Journey" by John G. Fuller. In the Philippines there are also numerous sightings of UFO's in the sky but rarely do I hear of alien abduction of Filipinos. It seems the aliens visiting the west are different from those visiting the Philippines and other Asian countries. Here we do not experience cattle mutilations or aliens experimenting on humans. It was only until science-fiction enthusiasts came across the pictures on a Chinese site that this creature that appears to be a woman from the Planet of the Apes really got some attention.

NASA has made a comment on the image. According to NASA, the image of the Alien is actually a 2 inch rock that has been carved by the windy Martian atmosphere.
The news of the mystery woman on Mars came just days after a team of French scientists claimed to have discovered proof that the red planet possesses high-level dense clouds of dry ice, which scud across its orange sky. Using data obtained by the OMEGA spectrometer on board ESA's Mars Express, the team found the existence of the ice clouds which sometimes become so dense that they throw dark shadows on the dusty surface of the red planet.
"This is the first time that carbon dioxide ice clouds on Mars have been imaged and identified from above. This is important because the images tell us not only about their shape, but also their size and density. Previously, we had to rely on indirect information. However, it is very difficult to separate the signals coming from the clouds, atmosphere and surface," according to lead scientist Franck Montmessin of the Service d'Aeronomie at University of Versailles.
