I considered that slightly odd at first as it wasn't that high in sky and i know the local airport likes to shut down before 11pm. Around 6.45 a.m., as the scientists were preparing to leave their tents, one of the porters spotted a white object on top of an adjacent mountain ridge, and screamed: "Sir, the snow man is coming."

Anil Kulkarni, a senior ISRO scientist who has been mapping glaciers for a quarter century, and his team members saw what appeared to be a robot floating a few inches above the ground, approaching the camp along the mountain slope. Kulkarni and his co-researcher, geologist Sunil Dhar, pulled out their digital cameras and began shooting the object even as the team raced towards the mountain to investigate.

The oblong object, between 3 and 4 ft. high, kept moving down the slope towards the team. It had a cylindrical head with two balloon-type attachments, a body, hands and two legs. It seemed to be walking, planting and pacing its steps like a human being, recalls Dhar.

It seems when the object reached the lower edge of the hill, 50 meters away from the stunned scientists, the team members' excitement alarmed it. It stood still for a few seconds, turned and started a steep 70-degree ascent towards the ridge top.

By this time, apparently due to the rays of the rising sun, its colour had changed to black. Soon it changed to white again, hovered above the camp for five minutes before noiselessly receding into a white dot in the sky.

Ever since 1947 when businessman Kenneth Arnold sparked off a worldwide UFO mania reportedly spotting flying discs, thousands of fake sightings have been reported from across the globe.

It would have also been easy to write off the Samudra Tapu sighting as a mistaken aerial phenomenon except that it was observed and reported by a group of scientists willing to stick out their necks and reputations to swear by what they saw.

From the photographs, the UFO looks like a bunch of balloons caught in a mountain draft, but an SAC report claims the object displayed complex maneuverability. It is a riddle beyond human perception, says Dhar who, along with Kulkarni, has contacted robotic labs across the world to determine what is technologically possible in unmanned flying vehicles.

I thought it was a helium balloon, but Kulkarni's description indicates an object with ahead-of-age technology, says R.N. Sarwade, director, SASE.

Perplexed, the scientists are now wondering if it could be something man-made. But there is no known matching technology yet in the civilian realm to explain the mysterious object we saw so up close, says Kulkarni.

Over the past year, Kulkarni and Dhar have been critically examining their sighting to deconstruct the object technologically, contacting top robotic laboratories in the US, Germany and Sweden.

Kulkarni has shared his report with the director general of military operations. Efforts to demystify the Samudra Tapu UFO sighting have made little headway, given the sheer high altitude, heavy snow cover and peculiar weather conditions which render the snowbound region virtually inaccessible for both air and ground expeditions.

But the quest for demystifying the sighting has not stopped. One way to understand the mysterious object is to undertake more expeditions in the area, says Dhar.

But the question is whether the object will ever be sighted again? Unless the sighting is repeated, it will remain a puzzle, says Kulkarni. Till that happens, this is an enigma scientists may have to live with. - INDIA TODAY.

Both distant and zoomed-in perspectives of the UFO reveal a saucer-shaped object, with a large central bright purple section, tapering off on either end. The extreme right end appears almost black in color, while the opposite end seems to be a darker purple shade than the center part of the object. The video also reveals that sometimes the two dark ends appear to become smaller and larger.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the aerial object for up to two hours, and yet, no video has emerged showing how the UFO left the scene. So, the question remains: How, exactly, did it go away? Did it fall to the ground, float away or speed up and vanish over the nearby ocean? Or perhaps (as in some UFO reports over the years), did it simply vanish?

The Peru chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) is investigating this case, seeking more eyewitnesses who may have videotaped the purple aerial object from different vantage points. Watch video at THP

Experts have been using fake monsters to test how people report encounters with mythical creatures.

One exercise saw one person unleashed in a popular Edinburgh attraction dressed in a gorilla suit, as part of a study to see how people react to so-called Bigfoot sightings.

The experts have also used props and costumes to create other beasts.

The team from the University of St Andrews, Fife, are keeping tight-lipped about their research until it has been published in a scientific journal.

But Dr Charles Paxton, a research fellow and statistical ecologist at the university, explained the "serious study" would help his team find statistical patterns in accounts of weird and wonderful sightings. He admitted: "People think it's a bit odd till I explain what I'm doing."

The Bigfoot experiment took place at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

They chose the venue as it has 50 giant redwoods - similar to those that adorn the US forests where Sasquatch sightings are generally reported.

He said: "It's like the area where you get reports of Bigfoot. There are other experiments that have involved fake monsters."

The garden visitors were all told they were taking part in an experiment beforehand.

One group were told to look out for Bigfoot and sent on a route that would bring the fake gorilla into view. They were later asked to report their sighting.

The other group didn't get to see the fake primate but they were asked to write down a personal account as if they had.

The study then looked at differences in the two sets of accounts.

The team revealed details of their Bigfoot study at a day of talks in Edinburgh yesterday.

It covered a diverse range of subjects such as "Nazi flying saucers", "Bigfoot" and the "evolution of sea monsters".

But the academics maintain they aren't just monkeying around as their prop-laden projects have sound scientific methods and aims.

Dr Paxton previously catalogued all known sightings of the Loch Ness monster to look for consistencies or patterns which could be explained by natural phenomena.

"It's a serious study of people reporting things," he said. "I'm trying to see if there are statistical patterns.

"All my work gets published in proper scientific journals. All I do is with the aim of getting proper results." - Sunday Post

Respected Moscow scientist Professor Vasily Bogoyavlensky has called for 'urgent' investigation of the new phenomenon amid safety fears.

Until now, only three large craters were known about in northern Russia with several scientific sources speculating last year that heating from above the surface due to unusually warm climatic conditions, and from below, due to geological fault lines, led to a huge release of gas hydrates, so causing the formation of these craters in Arctic regions.

Two of the newly-discovered large craters - also known as funnels to scientists - have turned into lakes, revealed Professor Bogoyavlensky, deputy director of the Moscow-based Oil and Gas Research Institute, part of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Space Shuttle Endeavour lands for the final time

It's officially over: space shuttle "Endeavour's" career has come to an end as it touched down for the 25th and final time yesterday upon completion of the STS-134 mission. In a career that spanned 19 years from May 7, 1992 to yesterday, Endeavour has firmly made a place for herself in space lore and will make a very worthy centerpiece at the California Science Center.

Right from the get-go, Endeavour was breaking new ground in space exploration, with her maiden voyage, STS-49, featuring an unprecedented 3 astronaut spacewalk and the longest time spent by an astronaut outside a space vehicle since Apollo 17 back in 1972, all in an effort to catch, modify, and redeploy a satellite.

In its second flight, Endeavour carried Dr. Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut, into space.

In 1993, "Endeavour" made the first service call to the Hubble Space Telescope, which had become something of an embarrassment to NASA because of a faulty mirror.

In 1998, "Endeavour" had the distinction of becoming the first shuttle to visit two space stations in a single year, docking with the aging Russian "Mir "in May and then visited the barely-there ISS in December to deliver the first American-built component.

In 2007, more than 20 years since the "Challenger "disaster claimed the life of Christa McAuliffe, who was to be America's first teacher in space, "Endeavour" carried Barbara Morgan, McAuliffe's backup for "Challenger", into space.

Going out in spectacular fashion, on its final mission," Endeavour" delivered the most expensive, non structural component to the ISS: a 2 billion (yes, billion) physics experiment, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer.

"Endeavour" would visit the ISS 12 times in total, 10 of which were assembly missions.

Needless to say, "Endeavour" has had quite a ride!

Now, with only one fligght left in the shuttle program, all eyes and hands are focsed on "Atlantis", which was originally supposed to have lown its final mission last fall. However, despite budget concerns, a final shuttle flight, STS-135, was approved to deliver a last load of spare parts to the ISS for the simple reason that the shuttles have, by far, the largest payload capacities of any space vehicle in history.

The witness describes the size of the object and also tells us that he informed her husband about the sighting.

"I was trying to decipher the size of it because it looked larger than a star and planet. I asked my son to get my husband and come out to see it."

She describes how her husband also saw the object.

"He also saw it along with my son and couldn't understand what it was."

She tells us how the UFO went behind the trees.

"The UFO had moved very slowly behind some trees but we still tracked it."

The witness tells us how she alerted her neighbour about the UFO.

"By some time, maybe five to ten minutes my neighbor drove in to his driveway and I alerted him to this UFO."

She further tells us how they went to her neighbour's backyard to have a better look at the UFO. She also describes what her neighbor saw.

"We couldn't see it over at our house so we went into his backyard and saw it keep moving further to the west. He saw the flashing lights and also saw it emit a strobe like light"

The witness finally tells us that they could not reach a conclusion about what the object was. She also tells us that the object kept moving west, and informs us about her desire to know if anyone else saw the object.

"Finally no conclusion on what we saw. It kept moving west and objects were in our way. I think we all would like to know what this was, I really would like to know if anyone saw this."
