Explanations provided by Pandolfi for the existence of the original working group include radar anomalies known as "Fastwalkers," which are sometimes ignored as noise in signal traces.
Bekkum also noted that a similar tale had been fed to Howard Blum during the research phase of his book in the 1980s. Bekkum commented that "Blum interpreted the passing of questionable material as a test by an unknown intelligence source. STARstream Research was alerted to the importance of Blum's out-of-print book from comments Pandolfi made during a recorded phone conversation, which originated with Armen Victorian, a non-affiliated researcher based in the United Kingdom. J. Allen Danelek. The Great Airship of 1897. Adventures Unlimited Press, 2009.
The 1897 airship is a vital part of the UFO story, and is used to reinforce a number of contrasting narratives. For the psychosocial ufologist it is a classic example of the spread of a rumour, fuelled by misleading and spurious newspaper reports. The fact that these events were being reported at the same time as international tensions which led up to the Spanish-American War has led some commentators to suggest that the 'sightings' were part of a war panic. Indeed some reports claim that witnesses met 'pilots' who actually made comments about 'flying to Cuba'. Critics note that the pro-war Hearst newspapers were more inclined to cover the story more sensationally than others. (See http://magonia.haaan.com/2009/in-the-west/ )
The alternative interpretation has always been that the reports from 1896/7 were actually sightings of extraterrestrial craft, and in a different age would be reported as UFOs or flying saucers, except that in the late 19th century they were being reported in terms familiar to people at the time. Ufologists point to the range of 'radical misperceptions' which generate UFO reports from mundane stimuli, and suggest that the same processes were creating the 1897 airship sightings. The 'rumour' hypothesis has been further refined by claims that the stories were transmitted by railroad telegraphers to while away the long night hours.
What you might think was the obvious solution to the mystery - that actual airships were flying over America at this time - seems to have been pushed to the margins by proponents of both sides of the debate. Is that such an impossible claim? We know that quite large dirigible lighter-than-air craft were operating in Europe at the time, is it possible that someone had built a viable airship in America?
Of course, here we enter the world of the mysterious eccentric secret inventor, and getting worryingly close to the fantasy aeroforms of Dellschau and the Sonora Aero Club. But is it possible that at least some, and maybe even most, of the 1897 airship sightings were just that - the sightings of a real, nuts and bolts airship?
Allen Danelek thinks so, and this book makes out an impressive, if not perhaps warertight case. He works methodically through the evidence for and against each hypothesis. The American newspapers were perhaps not quite such a haunt of 'liars clubs' as some historians have suggested, and much of the newspaper reporting seems to be sound. Danelek is well aware of the strengths of alternate interpretations, and accepts that many reports were indeed misinterpretations of astronomical and natural phenomena. But he claims that there are patterns in how the story developed and was reported that suggest this is not a complete explanation.
Would it be possible for an unknown airship builder (not 'inventor' because all the necessary technology was already known and often in use elsewhere) to have constructed and flown a vehicle which would have accounted for at least a significant proportion of the reports? Danelek goes, step-by-step through every detail of the technology he claims would be involved, and step-by-step demonstrates that such a craft could, theoretically, have been constructed and flown.
The key word, of course, is theoretically, because although each individual step is plausible enough, doubts begin to enter when you consider what would be involved in putting all these small steps together to produce the desired outcome.
Having itemised and considered the technical details with a great deal of background knowledge, Danelek attempt to tie them all together in a novel way - by writing a dramatised fictional account of how it could all work; creating characters and locations which could have come together at particular points in time, and resulted in the construction and destruction of the airship of 1897.
I can't say I'm convinced, but this is a fascinating book which presents a viewpoint on 1897 which I do not think has been presented in such detail before. It is a stimulating and provocative thesis which deserves careful consideration. -- Reviewed by John Rimmer
UFO SIGHTING IN CHESTERBROOK, PENNSYLVANIA ON JULY 4TH 2013 - 2 PAIRS AND A SINGLE UFO PASSED OVERHEAD. 2 OF THEM DISAPPEARED.
My girlfriend and I went to the local park to watch the 4th of July fireworks. We were looking up as the fireworks were supposed to start shortly. Just after 9 as it became dark, 2 round solid lights (objects) approached from the south. I thought they could be helicopters or military jets flying in close formation however it seemed that they were flying way too slow t obe jets, were way to big to be choppers (as well as making no sound). The two objects appeared as 2 bright yellow lights approx. 5x's the size of Venus in the night sky. The were flying side by side and extremely close together and got so close that the space between them decreased until there was none. At this time they separated slightly while banking to the NE. One of the UFOs then "turned off and was no longer visible as the other proceeded to the NE and approx. 30 sec. later it too disappeared (they did not fade, they disappeared). About 2-3 minutes later two more identical objects appeared/approached? from in the same place headed in the same direction and performed the same movements until one of them disappeared and then the 2nd one disappeared as well. We also noticed that neither of these objects/lights had NO flashing lights as planes and helicopters are required to and made no sounds. They displayed only one bright color, a pale very bright yellow. Finally a fifth craft w/ no visible partner UFO approached from the same direction and on the same course and we lost sight of it as the fireworks started up. There is absolutely no possibility that this was in any way an illusion or misperception of the fireworks (which did not even start until after the event ended. Neighbors also witnessed the UFOs and were equally puzzled by it. Also I am an amateur astronomer/sky-watcher so I am very familiar with astronomical event/objects and anomalies as well as flight vehicles in the daylight and nighttime. I felt excited, curious and a bit frustrated at not being able to identify the craft.

Other skeptical arguments against UFOs include:

* Most UFO sightings are transitory events and there is usually no opportunity for the repeat testing called for by the scientific method.

I was not only interested in the reports I was nervous and a bit frightened. For a few days I watched as videos and photos along with massive amounts of reports flooded in where huge crowds of people watched as strange red orbs hovered above New Years Eve celebrations across the world. This was not a report by a handful of people at a drunken party on a dark beach - this was thousands of people worldwide reporting the same strange encounter.
I looked at the videos as they started to flood the internet. I posted a handful on my site. I was fascinated by the same looking object appearing all over the planet. The object or objects would be in each time zone as that area brought in the New Year hovering clearly in areas where they had to be seen intentionally by those piloting them.
This was not a case of balloons, lanterns or helicopters this was a case of bright red hovering orbs showing themselves on purpose who would take off at incredible speed straight in to space after accomplishing what they intended to do. This was a planned, highly organized statement.
At first I thought we finally had a sighting that would silence the skeptics and join humanity in the knowledge that we are not alone and that UFO's are as real as the noses on our faces. Finally I thought we may decide to handle this subject in a new light as seeing has to be believing. People all over the world could not be wrong. Old year out- New Year in and TA- DA, a massive UFO sighting. How cool is that of our unknown visitors? How dumb are we not to get it?
The fact this massive worldwide sighting was so blatantly obvious immediately frightened me. I did fear that something very big and overpowering may be coming. Knowing firsthand the power our visitors have over the human race I feared what may be coming. As the hours passed and we slipped into the year 2012 I felt relieved nothing dramatic or traumatic took place- besides the massive sighting that is.
As I watched the videos arrive from all over the world of similar sightings it did occur to me that 2012 may be a far more significant year than I had given it credit for being. The idea did cross my mind that we may have all become lost in the theories and prophecies concerning 2012 ignoring the idea that it is the year we become heavily visited, or worse interfered with,by those who have been watching, visiting and abducting us from the beginning of time.
How can it be that now less than two weeks after this massive event of worldwide reports of thousands seeing the same red orbs that the subject seems lost and forgotten? I do not find any great interest in the event. It did not hit the news media in any form. The paranormal world talked about it however it lost interest as quickly as every other article or story that hits the internet. Now talk about strange- the fact we are ho-humming our way past this significant event is flabbergasting to me.
Talk about the 800 pound UFO that is sitting in your living room that everyone is ignoring ! This huge event being shoved under the rug as quickly as it has can only be thought of as mind boggling. How is it so many spend all their time
"seeking the truth or looking for disclosure" when this event has been gone by without much fanfare at all? How can this be? I guess we have been well trained to simply sit with a head full of slush waiting for the next scary story.
I can only throw my hands up in the air in confusion and frustration. I have to stop fooling myself about what my fellow earthlings want to hear or know about the subject of Unidentified Objects or many other events or encounters considered high strangeness. I have to accept the fact that we stay where we are with this subject on purpose and willingly. I would go a step further and say we do not know because at all cost we "DO NOT WANT TO KNOW.!"
It is far easier and less frightening to stay lost in the fantasy of it all. An exciting non realistic story of aliens being seen as in the bar scene in the first Star Wars movie is far easier to digest. The reality of it being a far different, less cuddly and fuzzy outcome with very different perhaps colder more mechanical beings is just too difficult for mankind to handle. It is much safer and quickly hidden away where we do not have to deal with if we view aliens as jazz playing, happy go lucky, nice bar drinking buddies who all breathe the same air and eat and drink the same things. All dressed in cut little garments it stays a nice way to deal with a very serious topic. It is the way our society deals with the subject.
Obviously when the real deal got far too close as it did over the past holiday season -we bailed. We let it slide by. We let the videos disappear and the entire massive worldwide report was quickly removed from our sight and minds. It is how we humans handle these things.
I am fortunate enough to be surrounded in my life by people who are aware of what is happening around and above us. I am fortunate enough to have contact with those who have had contact with the unknown and understand the serious consequences that can be involved with dealing with the unknown. I am aware that our lives could be changed forever in the matter of a few hours or days when or if our visitors decide to become known or wanting of more from us then they already take.
For now I must sit and watch as society deals with the subjects of the unknown in what I consider a strange and delusional way. I imagine this will not be real to most until one of the unknown crafts or orbs reported daily all over the world simply land right in their front yards and the creatures piloting them knock firmly on their front doors. Until then it will remain a good paranormal story they viewed along with all the others on their favorite spooky site!
All I can do is warn you that it is time to take the blinders off and start to pay attention to what is going on around, above and to you each and every day. I will go to my next life experience knowing I did all I could to try to shake my fellow humans awake when it came to things considered unknown. Clearly they will remain unknown as that is exactly how we want it to be.
