Eight planets have been found existing in the "Goldilocks" zone around their stars, which is neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water. Two of these, on the characteristics we can measure, resemble Earth more closely than any other known planet.
While the flood of new planets being brought to light by the Kepler Space Telescope have included quite a few in the Goldilocks zone, most have been much larger than Earth - either as rocky super-Earths or as suspected gas giants. The eight announced by Guillermo Torres of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics at the American Astronomical Society's conference are all less than twice the Earth's diameter, doubling the number of planets of this size known in the potentially habitable zone around other stars.
The pick of the bunch for homes-away-from-home are Kepler-438b and Kepler-442b. Both orbit red dwarf stars, but make up for this by being much closer than the Earth is to the sun, making it likely their average temperatures are similar to ours.
Kepler-438b orbits a very small star 470 light-years away every 35 days and is 12% larger than the Earth in diameter. Without knowing its mass, Torres cannot be sure of its composition, but used the BLENDER program to calculate that there is a 70% chance it is a rocky planet.
The distant parent star for Kepler-442b is larger and 1,100 light-years away, and also keeps more of a distance with a 112 day orbit. It is nearly one-third larger than Earth, reducing the chance of it being predominantly rock to 60%.
"For our calculations we chose to adopt the broadest possible limits that can plausibly lead to suitable conditions for life," Torres said.
The Goldilocks zones for these planets are calculated on the amount of light they receive. However, the range where water can exist in liquid form also depends on the strength of the Greenhouse effect on that particular planet, something we can guess at from this distance, but not yet measure.
In the absence of atmospheric information, we can only say that Kepler-438b receives 40% more light than Earth. Since its larger size may well also indicate a greater Greenhouse effect, the chance that it is warm is quite high, but it has a 70% chance of hosting liquid water. Kepler-442b, on the other hand, gets only two-thirds our sunlight. If it has a thick atmosphere commensurate with its size, its temperature may be very similar to our own.
"We don't know for sure whether any of the planets in our sample are truly habitable," says co-author David Kipping of the CfA. "All we can say is that they're promising candidates."
Kepler-442b easily outstrips the two previous most Earth-like planets which, despite being slightly closer to our planet's diameter, receive just 32% and 41% of our sunlight respectively.
The masses of some of the planets discovered by Kepler could be measured by observing their influence on their parent stars. However, these objects are too small to test in this way with existing equipment.

Police in Dresden say they have arrested a 55-year-old police officer on suspicion of murder after the body of another man was found in the Erz mountains in eastern Germany.

'VAMPIRE' GIGOLO TRIAL
Mark Perry, the man accused of ordering the hit on 'vampire' gigolo Shane Chartres-Abbott, will stand trial for murder in March.
Perry, 45, appeared briefly in the Supreme Court via videolink from prison on Friday.
He and two other men have pleaded not guilty to murdering Chartres-Abbott.
Crown prosecutor Andrew Tinney, SC, told the court the trial of the three men, which is due to begin on March 17, was expected to take six weeks.
Chartres-Abbott, 28, had been on trial in 2003 in the County Court for the rape and mutilation of Perry's former girlfriend when he was killed.
He was shot by two men as he left his Reservoir home to go to court on June 4, 2003.
Chartres-Abbott's girlfriend watched as the killers shot the gigolo in the neck, then bashed her father.
The court had heard bizarre claims a week earlier that Chartres-Abbott had told a client he was a 200-year-old vampire who drank blood to survive. Perry, who was arrested in Perth on July 2 after disappearing in 2007, is accused of being at the heart of the events leading up to Chartres-Abbott's death.
He allegedly paid 200,000 to have Chartres-Abbott killed because of what he had done to his former girlfriend.
His two other co-accused, Evangelos Goussis and another man who cannot be named, pleaded not guilty at an earlier committal hearing and claimed a key witness could not be believed.

Turning the theory of human ancestry on its head, Dr Eugene McCarthy - one of the world's leading authorities on hybridization in animals from the University of Georgia has suggested that humans didn't evolve from just apes but was a backcross hybrid of a chimpanzee and pigs.
His hypothesis is based on the fact that though humans have many features in common with chimps, there are a lot more that don't correspond to any other primates. He then suggests that there is only one animal in the animal kingdom that has all of the traits which distinguish humans from our primate cousins.
"What is this other animal that has all these traits? The answer is Sus scrofa - the ordinary pig" he says.
He explains: "Genetically, we're close to chimpanzees, and yet we have many physical traits that distinguish us from chimpanzees. One fact, however, suggests the need for an open mind: as it turns out, many features that distinguish humans from chimpanzees also distinguish them from all other primates. Features found in human beings, but not in other primates, cannot be accounted for by hybridization of a primate with some other primate. If hybridization is to explain such features, the cross will have to be between a chimpanzee and a non-primate - an unusual, distant cross to create an unusual creature."
Dr McCarthy suggests that Charles Darwin told only half the story of human evolution.
"We believe that humans are related to chimpanzees because humans share so many traits with chimpanzees. Is it not rational then also, if pigs have all the traits that distinguish humans from other primates, to suppose that humans are also related to pigs? Let us take it as our hypothesis, then, that humans are the product of ancient hybridization between pig and chimpanzee," he said.
According to Dr McCarthy, if we compare humans with non-mammals or invertebrates like the crocodile, bullfrog, octopus, dragonfly and starfish, pigs and chimpanzees suddenly seem quite similar to humans.
Pigs and chimpanzees differ in chromosome counts. The opinion is often expressed that when two animals differ in this way, they cannot produce fertile hybrids. This rule is, however, only a generalization. While such differences do tend to have an adverse effect on the fertility of hybrid offspring, it is also true that many different types of crosses in which the parents differ in chromosome counts produce hybrids that capable themselves of producing offspring.
There is substantial evidence supporting the idea that very distantly related mammals can mate and produce a hybrid.
Another suggestive fact, Dr McCarthy says is the frequent use of pigs in the surgical treatment of human beings. Pig heart valves are used to replace those of human coronary patients. Pig skin is used in the treatment of human burn victims. "Serious efforts are now underway to transplant kidneys and other organs from pigs into human beings. Why are pigs suited for such purposes? Why not goats, dogs, or bears - animals that, in terms of taxonomic classification, are no more distantly related to human beings than pigs?," he said.
"It might seem unlikely that a pig and a chimpanzee would choose to mate, but their behaviour patterns and reproductive anatomy does, in fact, make them compatible. It is, of course, a well-established fact that animals sometimes attempt to mate with individuals that are unlike themselves, even in a natural setting, and that many of these crosses successfully produce hybrid offspring," he adds.
Dr Eugene McCarthy says that the fact that even modern-day humans are relatively infertile may be significant in this connection.
"If a hybrid population does not die out altogether, it will tend to improve in fertility with each passing generation under the pressure of natural selection. Fossils indicate that we have had at least 200,000 years to recover our fertility since the time that the first modern humans (Homo sapiens) appeared. The earliest creatures generally recognized as human ancestors (Ardipithecus, Orrorin) date to about six million years ago. So our fertility has had a very long time to improve. If we have been recovering for thousands of generations and still show obvious symptoms of sterility, then our earliest human ancestors, if they were hybrids, must have suffered from an infertility that was quite severe. This line of reasoning, too, suggests that the chimpanzee might have produced Homo sapiens by crossing with a genetically incompatible mate, possibly even one outside the primate order," he said. - Times of India

I'm reading philosopher Elliott Sober's Evidence and Evolution: The Logic Behind the Science (I am in the midst of reviewing the book for Trends in Ecology & Evolution), and the first chapter presents a nice little example about probabilities and likelihoods that is pertinent to anyone interested in hypothesis testing and pseudoscience.The context of Sober's discussion is a chapter devoted to inference, and in particular to the advantages and disadvantages of Bayesian vs. frequentist statistical frameworks. There is a crucial and often unappreciated distinction between the probability of a given hypothesis being true if one observes certain data [ P(HD) in Bayesian terms] vs. the probability of observing certain data if a given hypothesis is true [ P(DH) ]. Here is how Sober explains it (p. 10 of the book):"Suppose you hear a noise coming from the attic of your house. The likelihood of this hypothesis [ P(DH) ] is very high, since if there are gremlins bowling in the attic, there probably will be noise. But surely you don't think that the noise makes it very probable that there are gremlins up there bowling," because that probability of that hypothesis given the data, P(HD), is very low indeed.Notice that P(DH) is referred to as the likelihood (of the data given the hypothesis), while P(HD) is the (posterior) probability of the hypothesis given the data. A confusion between these two quantities underlies much pseudoscience. Not that the Air Force really had anything to fear from the hacks at ABC News. But you do have to wonder if the brass at Carswell Field outside Fort Worth were splitting a gut during its "PrimeTime" show last night and going, "What a bunch of morons! They're rippin' off Larry King!"
It's a little too easy to get hung up in the fact that Tuesday evening's "UFOs: Seeing Is Believing" microwaved 90 minutes of leftovers from Peter Jennings' 2005 report by the same name. Because, yeah, after all, they tossed in the whole laundry basket again - alien abductions, Roswell, the Phoenix Lights, radio astronomers vs. flying saucers, even the same old B-52 incident over Minot, N.D., from 1968.
What made this show such an inadvertent glittering jewel was its utter lack of irony. Because David Muir, the standup blow-dry who had to paint the lipstick on this pig, actually said, "Tonight, we'll report what's new."
He said that.
Now, to be fair, we can't blame it all on David. The guy had a team of writers and producers and probably a bunch of marketing suits armed with flash cards and timers warning that devoting more than six minutes on a single topic would lose the entire audience.
And did you notice how the narrative made such a breezy transition from the Phoenix Lights to NASA's Phoenix Lander, the probe that discovered ice on Mars? Aside from the word "phoenix," neither had a thing to do with the other. So that segue had to be a group effort. No one person dreams up that sort of non sequitur by themselves.
The only "What's New" aspect to "Seeing Is Believing" was the lead segment - the Stephenville, Tex., incident. But ABC's irresponsible management of it attains tragic proportions only if one assumes investigative journalism, not entertainment, were the imperative.
Let's (sigh) run through it again real quick: A massive UFO passes over a rural region of north Texas. Multiple witnesses also report jet fighters in hot pursuit. Some contend the bogey was heading toward George Bush's ranch in Crawford.
A spokesman for the 301st Fighter Wing at the nearby Joint Reserve Base Naval Air Station (Carswell Field) denies any warplanes were in the sky that night. Two weeks later, aware that investigators with the Mutual UFO Network are filing radar records requests with various military and civilian agencies, the USAF realizes it's about to be caught in a lie. In a pre-emptive motion, it concedes it had 10 F-16s in the air. Conducting "routine" training missions.
All military agencies in receipt of Freedom of Information Act requests from MUFON - as well as the Department of Homeland Security - stonewall the release of radar data. But it's too late. Federal Aviation Administration and National Weather Service returns tell the story: F-16s were all over the place that night, straying out of their military operating areas and closing to within a mile of the UFO on its southeast trajectory toward Crawford. Nothing routine about this. And when the object bore down on a straight path to the Bush ranch no-fly zone, the military inteceptors were nowhere in the vicinity.
ABC compresses this stuff into a four-minute feature dominated by civilian eyewitnesses. There's a sound bite with MUFON report co-author Robert Powell. But no serious examination of the radar data, no airing of the redacted flight logs from Carswell, not even any indication that "PrimeTime" attempted to resolve the USAF's information embargo.
Perversely, "PrimeTime" concluded its broadcast with an exhortation from physicist Michio Kaku, who wondered if UFOs embody the technology needed to circumvent the constraints of time and space: "Let this investigation begin!"

We were going at least 50 miles an hour on the snowmachine. I looked back to see how far we got from it but that thing was getting closer, I estimate at 15 to 20 feet away from us. It was like that thing was not even running and seemed to float over the ground. I couldn't see any eyes on it...no red eyes, just all black. I was screaming to my cousin to go faster but the thing just got closer and closer like speed was nothing to it. When we reached the village the thing stopped and turned around. My cousin just kept going fast on the town road going about 60 miles an hour until we got close to my grandmother's place. He slammed on the brakes as we jumped out of the snowmachine and ran into the house. We told everyone inside about what was chasing us. My grandmother said it was the 'devil' and told us to stop being 'bad kids'.

I decided to follow it. When I looked closely it didn't seem to be walking...it was floating away. Dogs would start barking as it passed houses. I was chasing it holding a flashlight hoping I could get a look at his face.
