Nasa Successful Ice Cloud And Land Elevation Mission Comes To An End

"UPDATE: NASA'S ORBITAL DEBRIS PROGRAM OFFICE AT JOHNSON SPACE CENTER, HOUSTON, HAS REPORTED THAT DEBRIS FROM THE ICESAT SPACECRAFT FELL TO EARTH IN THE BARENTS SEA ON MONDAY, AUG. 30, AT APPROXIMATELY 5 A.M. EDT."One of NASA's orbiting sentinels is expected to return to Earth in a few days. The agency's Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation (ICESat) satellite completed a very productive scientific mission earlier this year. NASA lowered the satellite's orbit last month and then decommissioned the spacecraft in preparation for re-entry. It is estimated that the satellite will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and largely burn up on or about August 29.ICESat was launched in January 2003, as a three-year mission with a goal of returning science data for five years. It was the first mission of its kind -specifically designed to study Earth's polar regions with a space-based laser altimeter called the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System, or GLAS.ICESat's lasting legacy will be its impact on the understanding of ice sheet and sea ice dynamics. The mission has led to scientific advances in measuring changes in the mass of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, polar sea ice thickness, vegetation-canopy heights, and the heights of clouds and aerosols. Using ICESat data, scientists identified a network of lakes beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. ICESat introduced new capabilities, technology and methods such as the measurement of sea ice freeboard - or the amount of ice and snow that protrudes above the ocean surface - for estimating sea ice thickness."ICESat has been a tremendous scientific success," said Jay Zwally, ICESat's project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "It has provided detailed information on how the Earth's polar ice masses are changing with climate warming, as needed for government policy decisions. In particular, ICESat data showed that the Arctic sea ice has been rapidly thinning, which is critical information for revising predictions of how soon the Arctic Ocean might be mostly ice free in summer. It has also shown how much ice is being lost from Greenland and contributing to sea level rise. Thanks to ICESat we now also know that the Antarctic ice sheet is not losing as much ice as some other studies have shown."THE END OF AN ERAAfter seven years in orbit and 15 laser-operations campaigns, ICESat's science mission ended in February 2010 with the failure of its primary instrument. Because the spacecraft remained in operating condition, NASA's Science Mission Directorate accepted proposals for engineering tests to be performed using ICESat. These tests were completed on June 20. NASA's Earth Science Division then authorized the decommissioning of ICESat. After completing a review of decommissioning activities, the agency directed that ICESat be decommissioned by this August.Mission flight controllers began firing ICESat's propulsion system thrusters on June 23 to lower its orbit. Thruster firings ended on July 14, safely reducing the lowest point of the spacecraft's orbit to 125 miles (200 km) above Earth's surface. The orbit has since naturally decayed. ICESat was successfully decommissioned from operations on Aug. 14. All remaining fuel on the spacecraft is now depleted, and atmospheric drag is slowly lowering ICESat's orbit until the spacecraft re-enters the Earth's atmosphere.A statement from the Earth Science Mission Operations office summarized the achievement: "The ICESat mission operations team is commended for its exceptional performance, working tirelessly for the past eleven years (four years of preparation and seven years of operations), overcoming several obstacles in the early years of the mission, and closing out the mission with a flawless series of orbital maneuvers before final decommissioning. The positive control maintained over the mission right to the end shows the quality and effort that went into designing, building, qualifying, launching, and operating a tremendously successful mission such as ICESat." THE RETURN TO PLANET EARTHThe vast majority of ICESat will burn up in the atmosphere during re-entry. Of the spacecraft's total mass (about 2000 lbs.), only a small percent will reach the surface of Earth. Some pieces of the spacecraft, weighing collectively about 200 pounds, are expected to survive re-entry. The risk of harm coming to anyone on Earth from this debris is estimated to be very low.ICESat was not designed to perform a controlled re-entry and is unable to provide targeting to a particular location on Earth. ICESat circles the Earth from pole to pole, so surviving debris could land almost anywhere on the planet. Due to natural variability in the near-Earth environment, a precise location of where spacecraft debris will re-enter cannot be forecast. The U.S. Space Surveillance Network is closely monitoring the orbit of ICESat during its final days and will continue to issue periodic predictions of re-entry time and location. The NASA Orbital Debris Program Office will issue re-entry information based on these predictions.NASA and international standards for space objects re-entering Earth's atmosphere do not require controlled re-entry but do have requirements and guidelines for the maximum risk posed by debris surviving re-entry."The ICESat team has done a marvelous job to ensure that the spacecraft is removed as a hazard to other spacecraft and as a potential source of future orbital debris," said Nicholas L. ICESat-2 will continue the science legacy of its predecessor, and improve our understanding of Earth's dynamic polar regions with new and advanced technology.The Operation Ice Bridge airborne mission, started in 2009, is the largest airborne survey of Earth's polar ice ever flown. The mission is designed to partially fill the data gap between the ICESat and ICESat-2 satellite missions. For the next five years, instruments on NASA aircraft will target areas of rapid change to yield an unprecedented 3-D view of Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, ice shelves, and sea ice. Eyewitness states: "I live in an apartment. The apartment faces east. I was doing laundry in the complex laundry room. I started at 4:30 in the morning. I went to retrieve my laundry at about 10 minutes to six in the morning. When I was returning to my apartment with the laundry, I saw the light. I set down my laundry basket and took out my cell phone to take a few pictures. The light was completely stationary. There were no other lights of any kind present. It was very large. A single bright light. The sun was not visible yet. I took four photos with my 8 mega pixel camera in my cell phone. It was way too bright to be a star and there would have been other stars in the sky. There were none. It was too light out side for there to be stars. I stayed out side for about ten minutes and it never moved. I went inside for half an hour and came back and it was gone. I regret not staying out there to see what if anything it would do. It never moved. I am 53 years old and I don't spook easily. This thing spooked me. "

Bigfoot Threads On The James Randi Message Boards

Well, they're still at it at the JREF message boards; link after link after link after... about Bigfoot. I stopped counting long ago, there were so many and a girl has other things to do after all! But I think the count a few months ago, when I stopped keeping track, was close to forty separate threads about Bigfoot. For something they are so damn sure doesn't exist, they sure do go on about it!

So, just finished lurking over there and saw the first three threads in the "general skepticism and paranormal" section are about Bigfoot. The next three aren't, then the seventh one is back to Bigfoot again. Next two aren't, then another BF thread. On the first page alone, with 30 threads, eight are about Bigfoot. I don't think any other subject has generated so many different threads; maybe UFOs and psychics would be the next two categories.

Ufo Sighting In Hillsboro Ohio On November 18Th 2013 Ufo In This Area Since Sept After The Meteror

UFO SIGHTING IN HILLSBORO, OHIO ON NOVEMBER 18TH 2013 - UFO'S IN THIS AREA SINCE SEPT AFTER THE METEROR

My daughter and I have been seeing these ufo's every night except on cloudy nights since the meteor came down here on Sept. 27 2013. I'm not sure if that is the correct date or not for the when the meteor came down near here. They at first look like a star or airplane. But after watching them they hover and then move up or down and then fly across the sky.There are more then one, in photos I have taken there are up to 10 or more.In the photos they sometimes look like orbs connected together. I also took a video, in the video it was circle shaped and looked like it was spinning. It changed from yellow, to blue, to red,to green and orange and stayed in the same spot. We both have seen lights in the woods not far from our house. We walked to the woods where we saw the lights and took photos which had several orbs in them.The photos showed a very bright blue orb, a green orb and a pale white one. I have seen bright orange and yellow type orbs in the woods from photos I took on my deck during the day. We have several photos of the ufo's and orbs. This has been going on since we first noticed it after the meteor. It is confusing to me because in my photos the ufo's have different shapes it seems each time we take a photo. I know it is not an airplane or anything like that because we have seen several at a time and a bunch in the photo's. We have seen one large white light which looks like a satellite but there were several of smaller ufo's flying around the large white light.I know it has kind of upset my life because I keep checking the woods and sky taking picture to try and find some sort of understanding or answer for whats going on.I'm only going to send two photos of some that I zoomed in, lightened and cropped because I think they be worth something.

While I admired the thought processes of Dr. Krantz and the type of evidence that he preferred, I began worrying about whether we were dealing with biology here [sort of like the concern with the Loch Ness Monster]. As I noticed some of the distribution maps of ABSM sightings in North America, some seemed unlikely in the extreme. If one feels oneself being driven away from the "biological" solution, then one is staring at two rather different paths: Nonsense vs. Spectacularly Anomalistic. That choice revived an old memory. When I was studying for my PhD at Case Tech, I had a friend studying for his at the across-the-sidewalk school Western Reserve. Bill Baker was a world-class lunatic and a capital hoot. He was also the producer of the major talk show in Cleveland, the Allen Douglas Show. Bill would talk me into, every year on April Fools Day, to go on the show. He was Dr. Wilhelm Van Der Roe and I was Dr. Heinrich Hertz. Operating out of our plush laboratories in Pepper Pike, we had invented such wonders as lightning bolt collectors, the electric banana, and a micro-sound probe that could detect the speeches of past presidents trapped in their easy chairs. To note that some listeners obviously believed us, says much about the potential quality of some of our case reporters. Well, he also talked me into going on TV to speak "as an expert" about a report of bigfoot in downtown Cleveland. With a 20-year-old sportcoat, a too-thin tie with a tight obsessively uptight knot, and a disheveled hair-combing, I was decidedly over-the-top and undoubtedly set cryptozoology in Cleveland back several ice ages. [this was by-the-way my only foray into such misbehavior as shortly thereafter I grew up and began taking things way too seriously]. The point here is that it was never very likely that the big fellow in the news story saw a biological bigfoot in downtown Cleveland, and I'd bet a fair sum that he saw nothing at all. The little map above shows many unlikely spots for roaming cryptoapes of the Krantzian kind to be walking about.
That sort of thinking, of course, drives one towards the "nonsense" theory. But I didn't want to go there too quickly, even though in my shallow studies I didn't have the quality of witness that I "liked" [such as I had at Loch Ness with Father Carruth and Alexander Campbell et al]. The tales of Sasquatch which were resonating with me were the tales of the Native Americans. Some of these seemed like old folklore [like the Windigo] to scare kids into not roaming off alone in the woods, but others had that spiritual or at least uncanny element to them that hints of something more significant. Sasquatch was in the Mythos of the Haida and Kwakiutl etc. just like the Wasgo had been, but with a difference. They had spoken of the Wasgo as belonging to the concrete world, but the Sasquatch [even though a land dweller] as part of the group of powerful animal-spirits linked to the ocean--sort of like another reality from which they and their power emanated. These were the real spirit-gods and, I believe that trickster gods like Raven [or coyote, further south] were denizens of that realm as well. So, we're on the edge of All-the-Way-Fool again.
I just sat that all aside. I was no expert, and obviously didn't know what I was talking about. I tried, poorly, to keep a little track--weird ideas would come up, and plenty of hoaxes and people going so far as to threaten and punch out others at meetings [and we thought we had it bad in UFOlogy!]--and then I began to notice Bigfoot creeping into UFOlogy. Well, NOT welcome, not welcome at all. Along came encounters reports, most of them having no UFO around but some did. I was impressed by the pretty blonde girl and her mother, driving along, when a hairy white-furred "ape" reached into their car, jostling her and banging into her eye with the resultant bruise in the picture. Since this was two-witness and report-to-cops, it was the type of report that I like. But Michigan? As time went by, some people were claiming that Michigan was becoming a Bigfoot garden spot. Hmmm. Maybe. But not Biology in the Krantzian mode. But IF not, and if the pretty girl and her mom were honest [how can you not trust a pretty girl and her mom?], then what in or out of the world were we dealing with?
According to my "guts', ABSMs and UFOs are not supposed to mix. I had been aware that an Indiana UFOlogist, Don Worley, had collected several such cases, but ignored it. Then, I found that another UFOlogist, Stan Gordon of Pennsylvania, had a whole Flap's worth of ABSMs on his hands. Gordon was, and is [due to his work at trying to find the answer as to what went on when the military retrieved a large object at Kecksburg, Pennsylvania in the 60s] well known. Still the cases felt "wrong" to me. The creatures were right out of Halloween or Transylvania--absolutely NOT Krantzian--and more like big hairy goblins than biology either here or "out there". But could this sort of case be honestly ignored? Actually, I don't know the answer to that. I know that the fact that footprints were found which violate normal mammalian anatomy [three-toes, a la running dinosaurs] doesn't sit well with me. But if the witnesses, some multiples, are good then what am I to say? A good friend once said that he was conclusively convinced that ABSM-type entities co-exist with UFO reports. A researcher in Australia once made a whole catalog of them.
Creepy is the word for these sorts of UFO encounters [if such they are] and frankly "creepy" is not the norm. "Creepy" has more typified matters of the paranormal "nature" entities than UFO CE3s. But UFO researchers field these things. One of our best, Bill Chalker, looked into a 1975 multiple-witness case in Tailem Bend, South Australia where the "Yowie" [Ozzy's ABSM] was striding down the road carrying a lantern. In 1973, two teenage girls in Beaver County PA reported an 7+ foot tall white-haired ABSM carrying a lighted sphere. John Timmerman got a report from a military man of a 9-footer with dark hair simply disappearing, leaving no traces in the snow. None of these particular cases had a direct connection to a UFO. Now I've got too big a pile of encounters to prefer the "Nonsense" hypothesis. But I have all sorts of things which don't fit the Krantzian biology either. Oh brother, it looks like All-the-Way-Fool. But what sort of fool? Am I in Magonia or Alpha Centauri? Despite the occasional UFO or UFO-like connection, the ETH for these things doesn't fit well unless they're "games" of some kind, in which case my civilization-type-two amoralists are scaring people, literally for the fun of it. If it's Magonian activity, then they're about their imitative mischief-making again. It would be nicer if these clowns would make this a little easier. UFO SIGHTING IN CHEMNITZ, SAXONY ON AUGUST 12TH 2013 - CONSTANT WHITE GLOW, DRIFTED SIDE-TO-SIDE.My husband and I were on our balcony short before 9:40pm having a cigarette. The balcony faces the east. Clear skies and stars were clearly visible. We tend to stargaze while we're smoking, so it was pretty easy to spot this object. Our eyes had time to adjust with the night sky. At first glance you could assume it was an aircraft but we shortly realized it wasn't a commercial craft or anything we'd seen before. The unknown object came from the west and moved towards the east, it had a pulsating white light and drifted side to side. Absolutely no sound and the speed of the object was very slow. The object didn't move in a stable pattern. We watched it change direction to the SE. The feeling was strange and we didn't know how to feel about it.. almost like a joke had been played on us. We are constantly looking at the night sky when we're outside, we know the difference between a commercial craft, helicopter..etc. Kinda dumbfounded. The object after about 5 minutes of clear view disappeared behind a building towards the SE. WE MADE IT ABOUT ANOTHER MILE IN THE DIRECTION OF WHERE WE FIRST SAW THE LENS. ALL OF A SUFFER THERE WAS A BRIGHT LIGHT FLASHING IN THE TREES THE SIZE OF A FLASHLIGHT WITH NO BEAM THAT EXITED THE TREES. WE DECIDED TO TURN BACK AND HEAD HOME. THE FIELDS HERE ARE BROKEN UP BY TREE LINES, WE CROSSED FOUR TREE LINES AND IN EVERY TREE LINE BEHIND IS THE SMALL ENTITY WAD THE GLAZING A LIGHT AT US. WE FINALLY MADE IT TO THE LAST TREE LINE. AFTER WE WERE ABOUT A HUNDRED YARDS FROM THE TREE LINE WE STOPPED AND LOOKED BACK TO SEE THE SMALL LIGHT STILL FLASHING AT US. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WAS A BRIGHT STROBBING. LIGHT ABOUT THE SIZE OF A GEO METRO THAT ROSE ABOVE THE TREE LINE AND MOVED ALONG THE TREES FOLLOWING US TO THE HIGHWAY. BY THEN WE WERE VERY FRIGHTENED AND STARTED AT A FAST PACE TO THE HIGHWAY WHERE THERE WAD TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD. WE MADE IT TO THE HIGHWAY AND THE OBJECT STOPPED CLOSE TO THE HIGHWAY AND KEPT STROBING. IT VERY BRIGHT BLUE/WHITE LIGHT. WE DECIDED TO KEEP MOVING TO OUR CAMPER. THE LIGHT DISAPPEARED SO WE THOUGHT WE WERE IN THE CLEAR OF GETTING TAKEN UNTIL WE REACHED A NEARBY RADIO TOWER AND SAW THE SMALL LIGHT IN THE TREES AGAIN AND A VERY STRANGE HOVERING NOISE. WE WERE ONCE AGAIN FREAKED OUT AND STARTED A FAST PACE AGAIN TOWARDS THE CAMPER A HALF MILE. AWAY. WE REACHED OUR CAMPER AND SAW NO MORE LIGHTS BUT COULD HEAR STUFF MOVING IN THE GRASS TWENTY FEET IN FRONT OF US BUT WOULD STOP WHEN WE TURNED ON OUR LIGHTS.
