In what might be called a blast from the UFO past, a UFO crashed in the Siberian town of Chita this week and the Russian government blamed it on a "gas balloon explosion." Balloon? That is so 1947! And gas? Was there a swamp nearby?
The UFO crash occurred on April 9th, 2015, in Chita, a city in southeastern Siberia with a population of over 324,000. Eyewitnesses said it "fell from the sky." Chita resident Vladimir Milovanov described what he experienced to a local TV reporter.

No one was injured but the UFO or the concussion from the explosion caused damage to a nearby building and the UFO made a crater in a field where the huge pillar of black smoke arose. The object left a crater where metal wreckage was found. Based on the crater and the damaged parts, the UFO was estimated to be one meter in diameter.
The debris was collected and sent somewhere for testing, possible to the local office of EMERCOM (Ministry of Emergency Situations). The Eastern Military District said there were no operations in the area at the time. It was a spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs who issued this statement:
The object could not be identified. It does not resemble anything. One of the theories [of what happened] - gas balloon explosion.
Sounds like the Ministry needs to update its list of UFO excuses. As you may remember, the 1947 Roswell UFO incident was initially blamed on a weather balloon. And the 1966 UFO sightings in Michigan made the phrase "swamp gas" famous.
This is not the first UFO seen in Chita - another was reported by multiple witnesses in 2009.

So what was the UFO that crashed in Chita? While the city is nowhere near those mysterious Siberian craters where a spaceship was reportedly seen inside one last week, it is near Lake Baikal, the site of numerous UFO and alien encounters where Steven Spielberg is reportedly planning to make a documentary.

The Sunday afternoon session started off with Major George A. Filer (USAF Retired), MUFON's Eastern Regional Director, who says he worked as an Intelligence officer. His talk was titled "Mars the Living Planet." Filer is a well-known figure in UFOlogy owing mostly to his weekly Filer's Files, a "kitchen sink" compendium of UFO claims, where no claim is too absurd to receive a respectful hearing. Sometimes when I'm short of material for Psychic Vibrations (that doesn't happen too often), I know I can go to Filer's Files to find something entertaining to write about.
Filer says that when he was stationed with the Air Force in England, UFOs were seen on many of their flights. Sometimes fighter jets were sent up to look at them. However, the fighter jets often didn't return from this mission, so they sent up the tanker aircraft (in which he flew) instead. Because the tankers were unarmed, the UFOs didn't attack them.
Mars, according to Filer, used to be teeming with life until it was mostly wiped out in a nuclear holocaust some 180 million years ago. He showed NASA photos of Mars that purport to contain tubes (possibly water pipes, or trains) that extend for miles, as well as underground cities. There are numerous faces on Mars, and some of them look similar to Egyptian Pharaohs. But some life still exists among the ruins. The green colors on Mars represent growths of moss and algae.

I spent some time chatting with the Flying Saucer Physicist, Stanton Friedman, who I hadn't seen in about fifteen years. Klass and I had a friendly rivalry with Friedman. He's a decent guy when you get to know him. Still he's way off base about those UFOs.
At Friedman's table, before his talk, I asked him about the Marjorie Fish interpretation of the Betty Hill "UFO star map." ( I doubted, correctly it turns out, that I'd have the opportunity to try to nail him during his Q157 (3794): 1274-9). Friedman says that there's a movie soon to be made about him and UFOlogist Donald Schmidt (an odd couple indeed, since they're often been at odds concerning Holy Roswell). The movie will be titled "Majic Men", and will be completed as soon as 10 or 20 million can be raised.
In the closing session, MUFON demonstrated its brand-new smart phone App. It has three main functions. Two allow the user to stay in tough with MUFON messages and its database. The third, however, is potentially more interesting. It allows the user to receive real-time notifications whenever anybody in the same area reports sighting a UFO. This opens the possibility that large numbers of people might be notified of a UFO visitation, and provide additional witnesses and photos. JUNE 04, 2013 - INDIA - Was it a spy drone from across the border? Was it a weather balloon? Was it a UFO?
Samudra Tapu, a de-glaciated valley in Himachal Pradesh; A 12-km, eight-hour trek from Chandratal, is approachable only via a 180-km deep trek from Batal, the nearest road head on the Manali-Leh highway. Kaksar, 70 km away, is the nearest inhabited town.
Tucked away high in 15,000-ft glaciated mountains, Chandratal, the only sacred lake in the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, has for long been steeped in mythology. Legend has it that the crescent-shaped pristine water body is an abode of fairies that descend on Earth on moonlit nights.
But the glacier-bound uninhabited terrain has come to be associated with an equally incredible tale doing the rounds in India's top space and defense establishments; the sighting of an unidentified flying object or UFO at the Samudra Tapu region, a de-glaciated valley at an eight-hour trek from Chandratal.
More than a year after a five-member team of glaciologists and geologists had a 40-minute encounter with a balloon-shaped object straight out of The X-Files; the incident continues to baffle a section of the Indian scientific community.
Both Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the army are aware of the matter which figured even in Parliament last year when the minister of state with the Prime Minister's Office had, in a written reply, confirmed the ISRO report on the UFO sighting.
It was the penultimate day of a week-long expedition undertaken by Ahmedabad-based Space Application Centre (SAC) of ISRO on September 27, 2004.
The team comprising three SAC scientists and two geologists had pitched camp in the valley some 17,000 ft. above sea level. They were studying the Chandra basin glacier using satellite data.
Around 6.45 a.m., as the scientists were preparing to leave their tents, one of the porters spotted a white object on top of an adjacent mountain ridge, and screamed: "Sir, the snow man is coming."
Anil Kulkarni, a senior ISRO scientist who has been mapping glaciers for a quarter century, and his team members saw what appeared to be a robot floating a few inches above the ground, approaching the camp along the mountain slope. Kulkarni and his co-researcher, geologist Sunil Dhar, pulled out their digital cameras and began shooting the object even as the team raced towards the mountain to investigate.
The oblong object, between 3 and 4 ft. high, kept moving down the slope towards the team. It had a cylindrical head with two balloon-type attachments, a body, hands and two legs. It seemed to be walking, planting and pacing its steps like a human being, recalls Dhar.
It seems when the object reached the lower edge of the hill, 50 meters away from the stunned scientists, the team members' excitement alarmed it. It stood still for a few seconds, turned and started a steep 70-degree ascent towards the ridge top.
By this time, apparently due to the rays of the rising sun, its colour had changed to black. Soon it changed to white again, hovered above the camp for five minutes before noiselessly receding into a white dot in the sky.
Ever since 1947 when businessman Kenneth Arnold sparked off a worldwide UFO mania reportedly spotting flying discs, thousands of fake sightings have been reported from across the globe.
It would have also been easy to write off the Samudra Tapu sighting as a mistaken aerial phenomenon except that it was observed and reported by a group of scientists willing to stick out their necks and reputations to swear by what they saw.
From the photographs, the UFO looks like a bunch of balloons caught in a mountain draft, but an SAC report claims the object displayed complex maneuverability. It is a riddle beyond human perception, says Dhar who, along with Kulkarni, has contacted robotic labs across the world to determine what is technologically possible in unmanned flying vehicles.
It didn't look like a man-made object, adds geologist Rajesh Kalia. Even more incredible is the photographic evidence; among the first in India for a UFO sighted on the ground of the experience classified as a close encounter of the first kind in common UFO parlance.
Was it an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on a cross-border spy mission or an extraterrestrial being? Or was it simply a helium-filled weather balloon which had lost its way? The jury is still out.
The scientists circulated the account of their close encounter in ISRO, army headquarters, Snow and Avalanche Study Establishments (SASE), an affiliate of Defence Research and Development Organisation which runs weather monitoring stations in high altitude regions, and among district authorities in Kullu. The army and SASE are the only agencies stationed in high altitude areas.
I thought it was a helium balloon, but Kulkarni's description indicates an object with ahead-of-age technology, says R.N. Sarwade, director, SASE.
Perplexed, the scientists are now wondering if it could be something man-made. But there is no known matching technology yet in the civilian realm to explain the mysterious object we saw so up close, says Kulkarni.
Over the past year, Kulkarni and Dhar have been critically examining their sighting to deconstruct the object technologically, contacting top robotic laboratories in the US, Germany and Sweden.
Kulkarni has shared his report with the director general of military operations. Efforts to demystify the Samudra Tapu UFO sighting have made little headway, given the sheer high altitude, heavy snow cover and peculiar weather conditions which render the snowbound region virtually inaccessible for both air and ground expeditions.
But the quest for demystifying the sighting has not stopped. One way to understand the mysterious object is to undertake more expeditions in the area, says Dhar.
But the question is whether the object will ever be sighted again? Unless the sighting is repeated, it will remain a puzzle, says Kulkarni. Till that happens, this is an enigma scientists may have to live with. - INDIA TODAY.
Those serious ufologists over on UFO UpDates are always terribly worried that mainstream science and the mainstream media don't take them seriously. Why, they demand, do news-stories about UFO sightings always come out with the same silly X-File quips? Why don't scientists realise that there is a serious field of study in the UFO subject? The flurry of Unidentified Flying Objects spotted near Stephenville earlier this month extended to San Antonio and UFO's were also spotted over Victoria and as far south as Corpus Christi, 1200 WOAI's Bud Little has learned.
Some 200 people reported seeing UFO's over Stephenville, in Erath County southeast of Dallas on the evening of January 8th. But Walter Andrus Junior, the co-founder of the Mutual UFO Network, says the same night, unidentified objects were spotted in the skies over San Antonio, visible in the western sky and reported by observers at Interstate 10 and Wurzbach Road, on the northwest side.
"They say a large, cigar shaped object in the western sky," Andrus said. "It had many lights on it, from front to back."
Andrus says MUFON will talk with people in San Antonio, as well as in Victoria and near Corpus Christi, who also saw the objects that night. He says it's a lot easier to get statements out of people about UFO's today than when he helped start MUFON in the 1970s, because what is referred to as the 'laughter curtain' which painted people who said they saw UFOs as cranks or worse, has been lifted.
"The lights were so bright that it was difficult to estimate the size of the object," Andrus says about the UFO sightings over Texas.
He says a complete report on the sightings may not be completed until the end of 2008.

Some have pointed out that the classic disk-shaped UFO is entirely a product of popular culture and imagination. This, they claim, is based upon the fact that the term did not exist prior to its corrupted use in the wake of Kenneth Arnold's famous 1947 sighting, which arguably started the whole UFO phenomenon in popular culture. In point of fact, Arnold did not describe disk-shaped objects but, rather, likened their movements through the air to disks skipping on the surface of a lake. Before anyone could stop it, this inaccurate physical description spread like wildfire in the media and a leitmotif of the 20th century was born.But is this argument accurate? Were there, in fact, NO sightings of disk-shaped objects prior to the Arnold sighting? In examining old reports, we find that on the same day Arnold reported his encounter, Fred M. Johnson claimed to see six "disks" near Mt. Rainier. We also discover that only days before this, an Oklahoma man claimed spotting craft he described as "wash tubs," which could be interpreted as a truncated cone - a very disk-like structure indeed. Another sighting that month by Richard Rankin in Bakersfield, California involved the description of 10 saucers.Going back a few months, we find an April 1947 report from France wherein the object was described as a disk. That same month, meteorologists at the Weather Bureau in Virginia see a "disk" crossing the skies from east to west in less than 15 seconds.And we find still older accounts, like this one from 1883. 400 cigar and disk-shaped objects were witnessed in Zacatecas, Mexico traveling across the sky, blocking the sun. In 1878, the "Denison Daily News" (TX) ran a story about John Martin's UFO experience. Martin described to the reporter that the mysterious object he witnessed was the size (shape?) of a large saucer. One has to believe he was describing something vaguely disk-like. Otherwise, a 10" square photo album could also be described as the size of a large saucer. In choosing this imagery, I believe Martin is describing both size and general appearance. But it doesn't end there. We are almost compelled to reconsider the accounts previously ascribed the term "cigar-shaped". If one were to witness on end, a double-convex, saucer-shaped craft, would it not appear much like a cigar? This, I theorize, explains at least some of the "rockets" and "cigars" witnessed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But the question remains: Are we describing what we see or seeing what we describe? It's a chicken-or-the-egg scenario that will not likely be answered within anyone's lifetime. It is the controversy and doubt surrounding enigmas such as UFO's that both compels our imaginations and drives our curiosity.

Well, this is disappointing. In a response to a Freedom of Info request, Australia tried to recover its UFO files for a period of 2 months and came up empty-handed. Apparently, they've all been lost. It reminds me of the UK's recent disclosure of" its" UFO files, which was also not complete - the most important of them, involving the Rendlesham incident (the UK's Roswell), were mysteriously MIA.. not destroyed, just "lost." "The files could not be located and Headquarters Air Command formally advised that this file is deemed lost," the department's FOI assistant director, Natalie Carpenter, told the paper. Defense officials could not be contacted by Reuters. ""The only file Defense had been able to locate was a folder called: "Report on UFOs/Strange Occurrences and Phenomena in Woomera," a military weapons testing range in the center of Australia's vast outback, Carpenter said. ""All other files had been lost or destroyed, which the Herald said could fuel conspiracy theories about their disappearance. ""The single remaining file detailed a sketchy series of sightings from around the country and overseas, including people living in towns near Woomera, in South Australia state. "Now there's a group effort to find out why these UFO files were so carelessly handled, and why others were destroyed.
